Exploring Haptic Technology in Malaysia: Trends, Developments, and Hands-On Experience

Abstract

This workshop aims to provide an overview of the current research, technology, and future prospects of haptic technology in Malaysia. We will also explore broader topics such as Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR), and robotics with a focus on how these areas intersect with haptics. The workshop will include practical, hands-on activities designed to develop participants’ skills in integrating haptics with other technologies, making the experience interactive and engaging. The workshop targets individuals with keen interest in emerging technologies, particularly those who are eager to explore new trends and practical applications of haptics in Malaysia. Students, experts, healthcare professionals, and individuals from various other fields in touch with technologies are all welcome to participate in the workshop. 

Speakers

  • Kian Meng Yap (Sunway University, Malaysia)
    PROF. IR. TS. DR. YAP KIAN MENG is currently a Professor and also Head of the Research Centre for Human-Machine Collaboration at the School of Engineering and Technology at Sunway University. He has completed more than 20 research projects including the Japan APT international project worth GBP250000. In 2014, he was also awarded a SE ASIA Knowledge Partnership Collaborative Development Award funded by the British Council, British High Commission Singapore (£2000). He is an expert in multi-disciplinary areas involving IoT, robotics, drones, computer networking, and sensory technology. Prof. Yap has spent 20 years working in data networks (IT), telecommunications, computer networking, Haptics, manufacturing industries, and electronic control systems in machinery. His research interest is on the haptic over the Distributed Virtual Environment (DVE) in HCI environment. His research project on DHVE is meant to have multi-sensory feedback data such as voice, audio and force over the fixed and wireless network. He is the principal investigator for a few projects that are supported by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), ERGS, MCMC, Lancaster University (UK), PPRN, industrial partners and Sunway University Internal Grant respectively. His current research interests include haptics sensing, drones, odour sensing/tracking, tele-haptics, tele-robotics, materials sensing, assistive technology for blinds and the deaf, AR&VR. He is the founder of House of Multimodal Evolution (H.O.M.E.) Lab which is to provide novel and innovative multimodal applications and communications toward the technology world. He is also the founder of Human-Machine Collaboration Research Centre (HUMAC) that aims to be nation’s main technology.
  • Jessica (Sunway University, Malaysia)
    JESSICA recently completed her Bachelor of Information Technology degree at Sunway University, specializing in Computer Networking and Security. Her research interests encompass network and computer security, focusing on detection tools and network analysis. She has developed full-stack applications using Next.js, Tailwind CSS, and Prisma, and contributed to a drone-based mangrove conservation project in Sarawak, applying mapping and image processing techniques. Her technical proficiency spans network configuration, cybersecurity, web development and security, with experience in managing teams and research projects.
  • Myint Zu Than (Sunway University, Malaysia)
    MYINT ZU THAN is currently pursuing her PhD in Computing at Sunway University, specializing in Haptics and XR Technology. Her research interests span AR/VR technologies, UI/UX design principles, and sensory technologies, driven by her passion for innovation and advancing the boundaries of tech through research and development. She is also an experienced software engineer whose career in the aviation industry began shortly after earning her Honours Degree in Software Engineering from Lancaster University. During this time, she played a key role in delivering enterprise-level and customer-facing system enhancements, transforming the technological landscape of low-cost carrier airline services and products throughout the ASEAN region while significantly enhancing global customer experiences.
  • Lim Zheng Jie (Sunway University, Malaysia)
    LIM ZHENG JIE recently completed his Bachelor of Computer Science degree at Sunway University, specializing in Robotic Engineering and Machine Learning. His interest lies in all aspects of robotics and artificial intelligence, from software to hardware, with the long-term goal of advancing the development of fully autonomous robots. His past work includes designing and building combat robots, developing an interface system for medical instrument inspection automation, as well as creating a VR haptic feedback system for medical training, providing trainee surgeons with realistic simulations to enhance their skills. Additionally, he has experience in full-stack development, game development and graphic design, which allows him to contribute effectively across a variety of technical domains.
